The sectors hiring expats
Vision 2030 and mega-projects such as NEOM, The Line, Red Sea Global, Qiddiya and Diriyah are driving demand in engineering, construction, technology, healthcare and hospitality. Because some routine roles are reserved for Saudi nationals, expats are hired mainly where local skills are scarce — so target specialised, technical and senior positions.
How the work visa & Iqama process works
- Job offer: A Saudi-registered employer offers you a role and becomes your sponsor.
- Qiwa & quota: The employer checks its Saudization (Nitaqat) standing and secures a visa quota on the Qiwa platform, then classifies the role under the skill tiers (High-Skilled, Skilled or Basic).
- Visa stamping: The visa is authorised via MOFA and stamped at a Saudi consulate in your home country.
- Enter & convert: You enter on a work visa, complete a medical check and biometrics, and receive your Iqama (residence permit).
The Iqama is your key to living in the Kingdom — banking, housing, dependents and more. It is renewable annually while you remain employed and compliant. The full process typically takes around 4–14 weeks.
Understand Saudization (Nitaqat)
Saudi companies must employ a minimum share of Saudi nationals, tracked in real time through Qiwa. A company's Nitaqat band affects whether it can sponsor expats at all. Before accepting an offer, ask about the employer's Nitaqat status — a company in a low band may struggle to renew your visa.
Good news: more mobility
Labour reforms mean workers can now change employers through Qiwa when their contract ends, without needing the previous employer's consent (subject to conditions), and there is no personal income tax on salaries.
