If you have a job offer in the UAE, the next step is getting your work visa. The good news: your employer handles most of it, and by law they must pay for it. Here is how the UAE work visa and employment contract process works in 2026.

Two things you need: a work permit and a residence visa

Working legally in the UAE means clearing two steps through two authorities:

  • Work permit (labour card) — filed by your employer with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) for mainland jobs, or the relevant free zone authority (such as JAFZA, DMCC or DIFC) for free-zone jobs.
  • Residence visa — sponsored by your employer through the ICP or the emirate's residency department once the work permit is approved.

The step-by-step process

  1. Job offer & contract: You sign an offer and an employment contract approved by MoHRE (or the free zone).
  2. Entry permit: Your employer obtains an electronic entry permit, usually valid for 60 days.
  3. Enter or change status: You enter the UAE on the entry permit, or change status if already inside the country.
  4. Medical test: A mandatory fitness test at an approved health centre.
  5. Emirates ID: Biometrics and application for your Emirates ID — the card you will use for banking, telecom, healthcare and government services.
  6. Visa stamping: Your residence visa is issued, valid for 2–3 years and renewable.

From MoHRE approval, processing is often around five working days; the full end-to-end process typically takes two to three weeks.

Know your rights

  • Your employer must pay all visa, permit and medical costs (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021). You should not be asked to fund your own work visa.
  • Passport confiscation is illegal. Your passport is yours.
